What to Do If You Swim in Whitewater

Get your breathing and orientation back first
An unexpected whitewater swim is an emergency, not the moment to invent a clever technique. Keep your personal flotation device on, protect your airway, and listen for commands from the trained people leading the trip. Your first job is to see where the current is taking you and what lies downstream.
If the water is cold, your body reacts before your mind does. Immersion below roughly 60°F (15°C) triggers cold shock: an involuntary gasp, then one to three minutes of hyperventilation you cannot fully suppress. Getting your face clear and forcing slower breaths through that first minute is the most survivable thing you can do, because most cold-water drownings happen in that window rather than from hypothermia later.
Get into the defensive swim position
This is the response taught almost universally in North American whitewater courses and described in American Whitewater's Safety Code, the reference document most of those courses are built on. It has one correct shape:
- On your back, so your PFD holds your chest up.
- Head upstream, feet downstream. Your feet lead; the current arrives at your head end.
- Face up, out of the water, chin tucked so you are looking downstream over your own toes. You watch the route ahead, not the hazard you have already passed.
- Feet together and near the surface, toes breaking the water.
- Knees slightly bent, not locked, so your legs absorb a glancing hit instead of transmitting it to your hips.
- Arms out at your sides, sculling and backstroking to steer, slow down, and move sideways across the current.
That shape keeps your airway high, puts your feet rather than your head in front of the next rock, and keeps your legs out of the gaps in the riverbed. It is still only a starting response — depth, hydraulics, debris, strainers, undercuts, and drops all change what comes next. Rehearse it with a qualified instructor; the American Canoe Association and comparable national bodies certify the people who teach it.
Do not stand until the water is below your knees and slack
Foot entrapment kills whitewater swimmers, and it kills them in water that looks harmless. A foot wedged between submerged rocks, roots, or debris holds the lower body while the current folds the upper body downstream and underwater. Nobody pulls free against that force.
Two conditions must both be true before you try to stand:
- The water is below knee depth — roughly 18 inches (45 cm) or less.
- The current is slack, meaning it is no longer pushing you along.
American Whitewater's Safety Code puts it directly: never attempt to stand in fast-moving water above knee depth. Entrapment deaths have occurred in knee- to thigh-deep water with strong current, which is why depth alone is not the test. If the water is shallow but still carrying you, stay on your back with your feet up.
Until both conditions are met, keep the legs up, avoid sitting or standing vertically, and scan downstream. Feet may absorb a glancing contact with an obstacle, but they are not brakes and should never be pushed into unseen gaps.

Put yourself on the safer side of equipment
If a kayak is loose beside you, avoid drifting downstream of it. A swamped boat holds hundreds of pounds of water, and current can pin it against a rock or bank with a swimmer caught on the wrong side. When staying with it is safe, keep yourself upstream and follow the group's recovery plan.
Let equipment go if holding it pulls you toward danger, blocks your movement, or conflicts with a rescuer's instruction. People are recovered first; boats and paddles are recovered later, or not at all.
Never wind a line around a wrist, arm, torso, or life jacket — a rope under load in current cannot be unwrapped. If a rescuer throws you a rope, grab the rope, never the bag and never a loop. Roll onto your back, lay the rope over one shoulder, and hold it to your chest with both hands so it runs down your back rather than across your throat. Keep your feet downstream and let the rope pendulum you toward the bank; do not try to climb it, and let go at once if it snags or pulls your head under. Most throw bags carry 50 to 75 feet (15 to 23 m) of rope, so the thrower gets one realistic attempt at a moving swimmer — which is why throwing and receiving are both drilled in swiftwater rescue courses.
Switch from protection to purposeful movement
Defensive floating buys you a few seconds to identify hazards and choose a realistic exit. It will not get you to shore. Once you have a target eddy or bank and the water allows it, roll onto your front and swim an aggressive, head-up front crawl angled roughly 45 degrees downstream toward the target rather than fighting straight across. That ferry angle uses the current instead of arguing with it. Drop back into the defensive position the moment you are heading into rocks or a drop.
Do not burn all your energy swimming against the current. The nearer shore is not automatically the safer shore, and a calm-looking patch may hide another feature. Route choices come from scouting, local knowledge, the trip plan, and people who can see the whole scene.
A strainer is an especially serious obstruction: water passes through branches or debris, but a person may not. If you cannot avoid one, the taught response inverts everything above — swim hard at it head-first on your stomach and drive your upper body up and over, rather than arriving feet-first and being pulled underneath.
Know the run before you launch. The International Scale of River Difficulty rates rapids Class I through VI, and Class III is generally where an unplanned swim stops being a nuisance. Review trip planning so exits, hazards, signals, and roles are settled in advance.
Know when the swim becomes a rescue emergency
Cold is the variable most often underestimated. The widely taught 1-10-1 rule describes immersion near 50°F (10°C): roughly 1 minute to get the gasping under control, about 10 minutes of useful movement before hands and arms stop working well enough to grab a rope or pull onto a rock, and roughly 1 hour before hypothermia causes unconsciousness. Self-rescue happens in that ten-minute block, not the hour. Below about 60°F (15°C), plan on a wetsuit or drysuit; many paddlers use the rough guideline that air plus water temperature under 120°F (about 31°C when both readings are summed in Celsius) means dressing for immersion.
Signs a swimmer is deteriorating: uncontrollable shivering, slurred or mumbled speech, fumbling hands that cannot work a buckle or zipper, stumbling, confusion or apathy, and — most urgent — shivering that has stopped in someone who is still cold. The body has run out of the ability to warm itself, and that is a call-now sign.
Call emergency services (911 in the US) when someone is missing, trapped, unresponsive, seriously injured, unable to reach safety, or showing any of those signs. Give dispatchers the river or run name, access point, best available location, number of people, and visible hazards, then follow their directions. An untrained bystander entering swift water can turn one rescue into two.
Once ashore, get the person out of wet clothing and into insulation and shelter before anyone discusses continuing.
Practice the whole sequence in controlled water
Reading this page is not the skill. Each piece is rehearsed separately, then in sequence, somewhere an instructor controls the setting:
- Wet exits — releasing the spray deck and leaving an upside-down kayak calmly, tucked forward.
- Defensive swimming — holding the position above through real moving water, including a small wave train.
- Active swimming — the roll from back to front, the ferry angle, the sprint into an eddy.
- Eddy entry — crossing the eddy line and catching a stable feature or hand instead of flushing past it.
- Signals — the whistle blasts and paddle signals your group uses, agreed before launch and audible over the river.
- Throw-bag response — throwing accurately, and receiving a rope correctly on your back.
- Equipment recovery — collecting boat and paddle only once every person is accounted for.
