Have you found the station for the actual river section?

Start with the exact reach named by the qualified instructor or responsible trip provider, then ask which monitoring station they use and why it is relevant. Record the station's full name, identifier, and location. Do not select it solely because its name resembles the destination or its map marker is nearest the car park.

The reason to take location seriously is not merely administrative. How fresh is the displayed reading?

Record both the observation timestamp and when you checked the page. They answer different questions. A page opened at 11:00 can still display an observation from 09:00; in that hypothetical case, the observation is two hours old when viewed.

Copy the date and displayed time zone as well. Do not silently label a station's time as your phone's local time. If the page's timing is unclear, keep that uncertainty in the message rather than guessing.

USGS describes measurement and transmission as separate parts of streamgaging. Its overview says water level is typically measured every 15 minutes, while transmission intervals vary. What does provisional mean?

Provisional data have not completed final review and approval. USGS warns that instrument problems or physical changes at a measurement site can make them inaccurate, and later review can produce significant revisions. What does the recent trend actually show?

A hydrograph plots water measurements against time. Read the time span and units, then compare reported values rather than judging only the visual steepness of the line.

Here is an original arithmetic exercise, not a real station, forecast, or usable paddling range. All observations belong to fictional Station A on the same fictional day and in the same time zone.

From 08:00 to 09:00, the displayed stage rises 0.30 feet and discharge rises 200 cfs. From 09:00 to 10:00, they fall 0.10 feet and 50 cfs. Across the whole two-hour interval, they remain 0.20 feet and 150 cfs above their starting values.

Consequently, "falling during the last hour" and "higher than two hours earlier" are both accurate descriptions of this invented table. "Back to the starting level" is not. Neither accurate description means that paddling is suitable.

The useful habit is to state the comparison interval: latest value, previous value, and their times. Do not extend the last segment into the future or calculate a predicted launch-time reading from it.

These paired example values are not a conversion formula. USGS uses a site-specific stage-discharge relationship called a rating curve, developed through discharge measurements. Is the line an observation or a forecast?

Keep the two labels separate when checking National Weather Service river information. An observation reports a measurement for its stated time; a forecast describes expected conditions for a future time. Read the legend and relevant timestamps instead of memorising a line colour or assuming every graph has the same layout. If a forecast is present, copy its issue time and the time to which the forecast value applies. A forecast issued earlier today is not itself an observation made now.

Use official forecasts and alerts for the location, and ask the local professional which products apply to the reach. Where operations involve a dam, obtain the responsible operator's current notices through that professional or the managing authority; do not infer a release schedule from a graph.

In an actual message, add the real station link and qualifications; never reuse those sample numbers. Avoid closing with "looks safe." That phrase adds a conclusion the data note has not established.

When should a gauge check stop the planning process?

If you cannot identify the relevant station, understand its warning, or obtain essential current local guidance, postpone rather than substitute an online calculation or another group's old report. Do not enter the river to measure depth or investigate monitoring equipment yourself.

A gauge reading also does not inventory hazards.
